Silver produces a warmer less shrill sound that is more powerful and projects better. The "High Wave" also known as "Reform" or "Winged" Lip plate was very common on wooden flutes but is now also available on heads made by some very specialized makers and is now available as an inexpensive option. The advantages come from a more economical focusing of the airstream into the flute and a higher chimney that makes the sound darker but also stronger without much loss of flexibility.
